The ethereal and electric beauty of opal is mesmerizing. At no other time is this so apparent as when they are being cut. I think of it as opal abduction because of all the 'lost time'! They are a fun challenge to cut well and one must also be careful of how they are set into metal. For this reason I prefer to use high karet bold, bezels to protect them.
